Cosmetic & Reconstructive Procedures Performed by Dr. Pownell

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient’s physical appearance and self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance because it is elective. Listed below is a list of procedures commonly performed by Dr. Pownell.

1 - Rhinoplasty

Dr. Pownell is one of a few physicians in Texas that is Board Certified in both Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery).Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the size and shape of the nose. Some patients with external nasal deformities have additional internal nasal breathing difficulties and can be repaired simultaneously. As a general rule, your final result will be fully appreciated approximately one year from the surgery date.

2 - Face Lift

A face lift, or rhytidectomy, involves removal of the excess skin of the face and neck area.  Often, the underlying facial muscles and supporting system are tightened also.  This usually involves an incision beginning in the temple, extending around the ear, and finishing in the lower scalp region.  Many face lift procedures are done as outpatient procedures.  At times, patients will stay in the hospital overnight.

3 - Brow Lift

A forehead lift, or brow lift, involves making incisions just above the hairline to elevate the forehead and eyebrow area.  Many times, an endoscope is utilized to limit the length of the necessary incisions.  A browlift can be combined with blepharoplasty or other facial rejuvenation procedures.

4 - Eyelid Lift

An eye lid lift, or blepharoplasty, is designed to remove the excess skin and/or fatty tissue around the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure usually involves an incision in the upper eyelid area near the lowest skin crease and in the lower eyelid area just below the eyelash line.

5 - Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation involves placement of a saline or silicone implant beneath the breast to enhance the breast volume.  The incisions and implant placement can vary depending on the breast shape and patient desires.  A number of different types of implants are made and a decision of shape, size, and manufacturer will be decided after a discussion with Dr. Pownell.

6 - Breast Lift

Breast lift, or mastopexy, involves making incisions on the breast to remove the excess skin and repositioning the nipple and the areolar tissue.  The incisions can vary in position depending on the beginning breast shape and position of the nipple.  If added fullness is desired, breast augmentation with implants can also be done.

7 - Breast Reduction

At times, a breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is considered a cosmetic procedure and in not covered by your insurance carrier.  This procedure involves repositioning the nipple and areola, removing excess skin, and reducing the breast tissue.  Again, the incisions may differ depending on the shape of the breast.

8 - Liposuction

Liposuction involves the surgical remaoval of fatty tissue via small incisions and aspiration of the adipose tissue.  With liposcuion alone, no skin is excised.  To a certain degree, the skin will contract and shrink to conform to the removed fatty tissue.  Liposuction usually has the advantage of limited incisions and a quick recovery.  Liposuction can be done in virtually all areas of the body including neck, trunk, arms, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, and even calves.

9 - Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a common cosmetic body procedure that involves surgical excision of the excess skin of the abdominal area.  A “Full” abdominoplasty allows for elevation of the abddomal skin and removal of virtually all of the skin and fatty tissue from the umbilicus to the pubic region.  A “Mini” adbominoplasty involves removal of skin only in the area below the umbilicus.  A “Body” lift incorpaortes a “Full” abdominoplasty and excision of the skin of the hips and upper buttocks.  When the abdominal muscles are weakened and separated, tightening of the muscles can also be done.
